Boyd Coddington, the famed hot rod builder and television personality, died on February 27, 2008 at the age of 63. The cause of death was complications from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Coddington was born in Rupert, Idaho in 1944.

He began building hot rods in his garage in the early 1960s, and soon gained a reputation for creating some of the most beautiful and innovative custom cars around. In 1984, he opened up his own hot rod shop, Boyd Coddington’s Hot Rod Shop, in Cypress, California. In 1988, Coddington debuted his first reality TV show, “American Hot Rod,” which followed him and his team as they built custom cars for clients.
